Create a Better Virtual Community

Whether you have “sales” in your title at work or are the owner of a business – we all need to sell all of the time.
Today I am specifically addressing what to AVOID when creating a virtual community (so that you can make friends + sales online).
There are loads of ways to prospect. Leads are literally everywhere. The problem is, most people (unless trained properly) don’t know what to DO with them when they get them.
Sooo many people sell the idea of:
“I‘ll help you get leads…”
They know they are just selling you a pipe dream and literally a bridge to NOWHERE!!
 Getting MORE leads is not the answer to getting more sales
 Writing MORE content is not the answer to getting more sales
 Doing MORE Livestreams is NOT the answer to getting more sales
You need people that are more than JUST a LEAD.
So where do you find them? Great question!
You CURATE them.
You have heard Networking is SUPER Valuable for your business. There are thousands of books about it – so what’s the deal?? Isn’t that the same thing?
Not really.
Creating a Virtual Community is BETTER!!
It allows you to keep the conversation open!!
→ If you are talking, you have their most valuable asset: their attention.
Buuut I see waaaay too many people approach creating, growing and maintaining their Virtual Communities ALL WRONG.
They are setting themselves up to attract freebie hunters.
They do a “free challenge” and spend more time and money promoting and delivering it than they make and are left broke and ready to quit. I have seen it a hundred times.
SMH
TOO MANY “Guru’s” tell us to set up our Virtual Communities as “curriculum” based – what I mean is that it’s all about them being the AUDIENCE… the student . . . INSTEAD invite them to JOIN IN the conversation and CONNECT.
Connect with YOU and CONNECT with others in the community.
Especially when we are curating a virtual community of business owners, we want to encourage connections, referrals, conversations about what ELSE we have in common, all the while as the CURATOR you get to facilitate the connections.
My analogy is that you have the opportunity to be the HOSTESS, not the Lecturer. This is SO much more effective AND waaaaaay more FUN!!!
This alleviates you from having to be the ONLY ONE bringing value to the community.
This brings more people together.
This curated virtual community allows for you to stand out as the leader without having all of the burden or the heavy lifting all of the time.
Avoid standing behind the lecturn.
Instead, connect both on the main discussion page, in the comments of the discussions AND personally (this is the BIG difference riiight here).
It’s right there when you bring the conversation to 1:1 that it becomes an easy transition to ask about their b
Creating a Virtual Community is THE easiest way to create conversation opportunities with like-minded business people.
As long as you avoid showing up as the “lecturer”, and create opportunities for connection and conversation both within the group and personally, you will have a virtual community who will always stand beside you, listen to your offers when you have them and be the first in line to buy.
That is the power of building a Virtual Community the RIGHT WAY.

If you are spending more than 30% of your working hours trying to figure out what to post, how to connect with potential clients, connectors or collaborators and creating proposals FAST, you need to consider this.
Henry Ford was the epitome of innovation. He did not invent the engine or the car or even the assembly line… what he DID do was improve on the process. We know him from his Model T car that made car ownership accessible to the masses.
🤔 Did you know there was a Model A, B, C. . . all the way up to “T”?
That shows he had the willingness to get things wrong. He had the willingness to keep trying and improving.
💡Henry Ford was an innovator. That is what I am encouraging you to be for your own sales process for your business.
In other words:
1. Use what you have in front of you (like the content of the businesses you want to connect with)
2. Re-use what you have already used (like the interview you did last Winter about productivity)
3. Create templates for everything! If you have made it ONCE (an email, a proposal, an invoice, a contract) CREATE a template out of it so that the NEXT time you want to create an email, proposal, invoice or contract, you are not starting from scratch.
🗺️ I live by this motto “I reserve the right to always make this better” this gives me permission to START without it being “PERFECT”.
By knowing that I will always be seeking to INNOVATE and improve the PROCESS I have MORE time to focus on the PERSON in front of me. Whether it’s developing a genuine business relationship or delivering a promised service or product. 💃🏻

There is a time and a place for those activities…
But NOT if you are wondering where your next client is coming from or if you are struggling to pay the mortgage this month.
After starting and scaling two successful businesses (an ISO and a beverage company) I took 5 years off, became a yoga teacher,and 100% focused on becoming a mom, finally having our baby and raising him until he went to school.
One day, I bought a book off of Amazon and on the back was a website. The website had me fill out my name and email in exchange for a download that went along with the book. The next few weeks I started getting emails from a coach.
This was my first foray into doing business virtually in a global economy.
I started going into Facebook groups and connecting with other women business owners. Some were virtual assistants, freelance writers and many were starting their coaching businesses. I got on the phone with a few and was horrified at what I heard. They had beautiful branding and gorgeous websites but they were going out of business.
I even tried to hire a few of them but they would talk and talk and talk about themselves and NEVER ask specific questions. They would drone on about what they did but NEVER establish their value. It was straight out of a sales training nightmare. They were smart and great at their work but STARVING because they were trying to live off of referrals. They believed that MORE marketing was the answer. Spoiler alert: it’s not.
The biggest problem I saw everyone making (those who were complaining that they had no clients or customers) was that they were doing all of the steps OUT OF ORDER.
They were focusing on “getting headshots” and “branding their website” but had ZERO money coming in the front door. These were smart, highly experienced business women from ALL types of industries: Lawyers who became Life Coaches, Engineers who became Authors, Medical Doctors who became Health Coaches, Harvard Professors who became Business Coaches and Ivy Leaguers who became Email Marketers.
They understood business. They were wicked smart. I kept asking myself “How were they missing this???”.
Then I started to realize that the online space can play on your worst fears and press on your self-doubt like no other space. With custom-made newsfeeds that show you exactly what you’ve expressed interest in, you only see your LACK and it can feel like EVERYONE else has already DONE what you are just setting out to do and … they are doing it better (or at least it can FEEL that way).
It’s not your fault if you feel defeated.
There is so much PRESSURE to do more, show up more, be more visible that the actual REASON you wanted to start your business in the first place can get lost. You wanted to SHARE. You wanted to SERVE. You wanted to SUPPORT. But all you are getting is exhausted trying to KEEP UP.
There IS a better way.
You can AVOID all of the fluff and get clients NOW. This week.
I shared an example of yet another client who did it AGAIN just this PAST week. Yes, even in the midst of ALL that is going on in the world right now.

Let me paint a picture for you . . . someone pings your inbox, it’s an inquiry.

“I need a _____, how much do you charge?”

👆Possible Reaction A:

Scrambles, panics and worries that they won’t be able to produce results and then thinks through all of the 2,367 steps and possible outcomes, then messages a friend and asks what she would do, but the friend is just as lost as you. . . 😬

⏰ Time is slipping by and the response is there still, blinking, mocking your seeming inability to give a proposal.

You think about it, add it all up and think “that’s too much, they won’t pay that… I mean COVID”

I will give them a deal… 💸

So what should have been a $10,000 proposal becomes a $1,200 proposal that gets snapped up because it IS dirt cheap and the SAME vicious cycle begins again…. “I hate sales” and “Customers are jerks” 😤

Resentment follows and burning the midnight oil resumes.

Worst thing is… The client loves you so much they refer you to all of their friends who also now think you can move heaven and earth for what ended up being less per hour than you tip the barista on your double mocha skim half caf venti.

YUP.

That is ONE way to respond.

OR you could take another approach 🤔

Let me present Possible Reaction B 👩‍💻

You see the inquiry, and look THEM up.

Find a connection. Ask around about THEM. 👀

Discover some talking points and questions YOU have before making anyyyyyy type of possible proposal.

Send them a form to fill out or book a call and YOU get to ask questions so that you can see the FULL picture of their situation. 🤲

You see what they need and start with a small project first so that you can see what type of client they are to work with.

You know how to upsell at the appropriate strategic time and for those clients who you love working with, you are able to create continued offers that allow them to keep you on retainer for a recurring fee and you get to be a part of their growing business as a thought partner, not JUST a worker bee trading dollars for hours.❌

These are two of thousands of possible scenarios of how an initial inquiry might play out. If you read this and thought that I must have been spying on you, I haven’t, but I have traveled this EXACT path hundreds of thousands of times over the last 26 years selling and teaching to sell professionally.

I have spent the last week talking to thousands of business owners about their current free group and even MORE about what they should be considering if they are contemplating STARTING one…

Great question and topic! I have a similar issue, where I see other businesses who could definitely benefit from my services, but they don’t know me at all and my business isn’t officially launched yet so it’s not like they can find my credentials or check me out if I drop a business card or a polite hello. I don’t know how to approach them cold or get them to enter my warm market. An outsider looking in, trying to explain that their current process isn’t great and they should let me fix it – super rude! 🤪 I am willing to offer up some free services (because all I spend is my time at this point, and trial clients are helping me build a good reputation) but even that approach sounds scammy. Before quarantine, I’d have just patronized their establishment and made friends, but this distancing thing really takes the special personality and genuine feel of a working relationship out of the picture.

👉 My response:
Agreed. I am a huge proponent of personal connections and when I can’t meet in real life due to a pandemic like now or because maybe I want a broader, global audience and can’t visit them in the UK or even a few states away…. hosting a virtual community gives me a reason to reach out and invite them to something that isn’t a pitch, but instead a conversation where there can be give and take around big ONLY what I do and my expertise but a VARIETY of topics because all of us are multi-dimensional and it’s great to show all the pieces of ourselves…. a group gives us that reason to reach out and container to be ourselves and invite others to do the same ❤️

My group has grown alongside my business, has NOT felt like an albatross and has truly been a source of “leads” for buyers, invites to podcasts (and other media) and other opportunities that I could not have even THOUGHT of before I had this beautiful, fun, place to connect with smart women business owners from around the world ❤️

Hosting a Virtual Community!! But hear me out first . . . . . before you shut me down and say:

“Renee, I have NO time for anything else right now . . .”

There is a STRUCTURE and a SYSTEM that most people DON’T DO.

Before I can give you THAT, I need to share with you some of the biggest reasons why (from a sales perspective) having a virtual community has helped me and the women I coach grow our income and impact.

Then, decide for yourself. . .

Having a virtual community associated with your business is and has been for years a phenomenal way to communicate with like-minded people who care about what you love to talk about.

Whether it’s a community to discuss recipes, workouts, essential oils or marketing strategies, it is a reason to start the conversation, continue the conversation and invite those most interested to something more (like to buy the membership, purchase the program or invest in coaching).

3 Reasons why hosting a free community creates impact AND income:

1. Hosting a free community becomes a reason to reach out.

For example: “I am talking all about that with the women in my community this week, I think you’d really add to the conversation. Do you want the link to request to join the group?”

2. Hosting a free community becomes a reason to continue the conversation.

For example: “I am so glad you requested to join the community. It’s so interesting how you have created _______, I have so many questions! Let’s get to know each other better! I have time tomorrow at 3:45 PM EST or Friday at 9:15 AM EST, would either of those times work for you for a quick phone call?”

3. Hosting a free community becomes a reason to discover what the people who are paying attention are struggling with and how you uniquely may be able to help them.

For example: “Please help. As a ____ who helps _____ I am creating some training around ______, _______ and _________. But I need your help deciding which one to run first.”

There is something so magical when it comes to a community that is so important now. With connections happening in such DIFFERENT ways across the globe, it may be easy to mourn the ways we used to gather and connect. I miss restaurants, girls nights and meeting for lunch.

However all is not lost . . . This has inspired new ways to connect that we may have never tried before. More and more people are getting creative with how to connect and yet still be physically apart. This is why virtual community connection has become more important NOW than ever before in our lives.

But then a problem arises . . .

What do I share?

When do I share it?

How often do I post?

What do I post?

Then it starts to feel like “one more thing” to do . . . and we hold back. This is NOT the time to hold back.

The #1 Sales Rules you might be breaking:

👉Prejudging

Let me explain: You think you know what someone will say or do before it happens.

😬Don’t take away their right to make their own decisions.

This is the thought that floats through the brain on someone who is pre-judging:
“I don’t want to invite them to _______ they probably_____”

Fill in the blank:
Don’t have the time
Don’t have the money
Don’t need it

We get in our own head and we stay silent.

We hide our offers.

That is not fair!

Especially to the people who literally are DREAMING of finding someone just like you!

They are thinking…
Boy, I wish there was a sales coach who had a simple and fun system for connecting with great people, identifying their needs and wants and then making them offers that feel completely custom (giving them extremely high value).

Or I wish there was a Virtual Assistant out there that could just upload everything from that challenge I ran in a Facebook group to my website …

Or I wish there was someone who could take those recordings I did on my phone and turn them into a weekly podcast!

Or I wish there was someone who could take this google doc and turn it into a gorgeous funnel.

I bet you have said this AND I bet you are the person someone has been searching for!

Stop pre-judging and allow the people who need you to find you.

What can you DO instead???

1. Be open to all of the possibilities

What NOT to Do with a Referral

I love referrals. If you are selling a service like coaching or website design, virtual administrative services or some combination of these, I am talking to you.

Referrals sent to you for your work like building a website, managing social media accounts, creating funnels, writing sales pages, coaching and strategy sessions are a clear sign that you are AMAZING at what you do. However, I have learned that not everyone has the same process for connecting with referrals as I do.

My process is painless. . . let me share with you what I mean exactly!

Have you ever experienced this scenario:

“I got a referral from __
We had a good call.
I sent the proposal but I haven’t heard back.”

If this has ever happened to you, I want you to know, it’s not your fault!!

Most other coaches just don’t have the experience in this very specific (and very important) part of business. As for me, I’ve built an entire career at this EXACT juncture.

This is where the rubber meets the road. Without this exact piece humming like a fine-tuned machine, there will be a LOT of potential clients (even rock solid referrals) that will simply hire someone else.

There is a LOT of BAD advice out there around this.

Some BAD advice I heard this week:

“You just need to get 100 No’s”

More BAD advice:

“You have to get REALLY good at overturning objections”

Not true either.

and the worst advice . . . “just keep following up” UGH!!!!

What I teach is VERY different. I teach how to ask better questions. This ia where it gets fun and a TRUE connection happens. This preserves the relationship and KEEPS the door open and a VERY specific road back to you.

If you are like me, you have zero tolerance for “beating around the bush” … maybe it’s because I was born and raised in and around New York City. Maybe it’s because it’s so dang cold right now in Detroit . . . even the people who “love winter” are like “why do I live here”.

So I’ll get right to the point:

  1. Stop being the person who ONLY writes an email, posts on social or sends a PM when you are selling something.

  2. Give value (I went deeply into this on The “S” Word LIVE show today) The fact is, you know more about the particular thing you work through with your clients than your audience does right now. Even though it IS IMPORTANT that your students learn the breadth and depth of the solution eventually, for TODAY, in your email and on your social posts you are granted permission to give a summary (*that’s all your audience has the bandwidth for most of the time anyway).

  3. Invite. Yes, as time goes on, it is IMPERATIVE to invite your audience (whether there are 50 or 50,000 of them) to hear about how you work with your clients. That could look like an introduction post, a flash sales or a private message to hear about something you haven’t released to the public yet and they will be the first to check it out.

Here is the BEST news yet‼️

You can take the pressure off because not everyone is going to become a client.

💥BOOM – there I said it.

Does that make you feel better?

There are people in your audience right now who love you, but will never ever buy anything from you. This does NOT mean you kick them out of your group, off your email list or out of your life. NO!!!

Each and every person you connect with is one of the 3 C’s (if we’ve been hanging out for any length of time you have heard me say this before). They are either a Connector, Collaborator or Client and OFTEN someone WILL become all 3 over the course of your relationship (but that is only if you are creating new offers and continuing to invest in your own personal and professional development).

How did OPRAH create such an incredible IMPACT on the world in such a short span of time? She has the same 24 hours as we do. . .

#1 She showed up CONSISTENTLY

I knew that no matter what she would be there. No matter what kind of day she was having or whatever was happening in the world SHE would show up. Having that consistency is hard. I get it, but there are ways to make it easier. Even for us today. Leveraging tools and technology so that we can do a little and get a LOT out of it (and so does the audience).

#2 She Shined the LIGHT on Others

She found the MOST interesting people and interviewed them. She let them talk about what THEY were passionate about and what they wanted to share. The great news for those introverts listening, the FOCUS is on the GUEST.

#3 LEVERAGE

She leveraged those connections and continued the relationship. Those initial interviews were the BEGINNING of a relationship, not the PINNACLE of it. They gave her PROXIMITY and then she was able to CONTINUE the conversation. Everyone we connect with is one of the 3 C’s. A connector, a collaborator or a client.

Today I’m going to talk about an OLLLLLLD Tale that I heard looooooong ago. It’s about the day the devil decided to have a yard sale” This story was told to me loooong ago. The source is unknown to me, but the message is quite clear:

So the devil 👺laid out all of his stuff all with varying price tags and the shoppers shuffled in…

Everyone was a little bit wary, but interested.

Inside his garage he had all of his tools laid out.

His pitch fork and a bunch of other really gnarly looking tools 🛠⚙️🔪⚔️ were all shiny, they looked hardly used and were really reasonably priced…then there was this ONE tool, it looked almost like an old wooden door stopper, it was priced at 2 MILLION dollars! What?!?

Well, there were a ton of inquiries on all of his stuff from the world’s top villains and unwitting teenagers…

They all came to see what the devil was getting rid of while they were masterminding their own evil takeovers.

When asked about the 2 million dollar tool (it hadn’t sold yet and the day was almost over) the devil leaned in – sort of a whisper- and said “it’s really the ONLY one I ever used. All the others were just for show” he admitted …

What??

What is this old, wooden door stopper looking thing??

The answer was chilling…

Doubt

WHAT?

Yes, doubt. The devil replied “one tiny little tap into the heart of a human and they do the rest” (he giggled a little)

He went on:
One little sliver of doubt in their heart and they totally freeze.

They get scared and stop working toward their goals and dreams.

They get angry quickly at their loved ones

They blame others

They blame society

They basically turn into little devils themselves “It’s GLORIOUS”

He went on: The best part is it is SO easy to get rid of it, but most of them NEVER do it!

All they have to do is take a deep breath and take ONE step toward the DREAM that is in their heart… JUST ONE STEP is strong enough to banish it from their hearts.

Now of course I was busy and was tapping hearts so often they may have to do it more than once…

How do we fix it?

Take a deep breath

Shake it off (shake!!!!)

THEN take ONE step forward.

Think of that ONE BIG DREAM you have been holding in your heart.

Maybe it’s to start coaching versus being the one DOING the tasks but you doubted anyone would want YOU to coach them.

Maybe it’s calling a publisher about that book that you’ve hidden away that is 90% done, but you doubted anyone would want to read it anyway.

Maybe it’s recording your first LIVE video (and making it public) but you doubted anyone would want to hear what you have to say.

Banish the doubt!!!

The cure: flip the script in your head from “Why Me to WHY NOT ME??”

Whether you have “sales” in your title at work or are the owner of a business – we all need to sell all of the time.

Today I am specifically addressing what to AVOID when creating a virtual community (so that you can make friends + sales online).

There are loads of ways to prospect. Leads are literally everywhere. The problem is, most people (unless trained properly) don’t know what to DO with them when they get them.

Sooo many people sell the idea of:

“I‘ll help you get leads…”

They know they are just selling you a pipe dream and literally a bridge to NOWHERE!!

X Getting MORE leads is not the answer to getting more sales

X Writing MORE content is not the answer to getting more sales

X Doing MORE Livestreams is NOT the answer to getting more sales

You need people that are more than JUST a LEAD.

So where do you find them? Great question!

You CURATE them.

You have heard Networking is SUPER Valuable for your business. There are thousands of books about it – so what’s the deal?? Isn’t that the same thing?

Not really.

Creating a Virtual Community is BETTER!!

It allows you to keep the conversation open!!

→ If you are talking, you have their most valuable asset: their attention.

Buuut I see waaaay too many people approach creating, growing and maintaining their Virtual Communities ALL WRONG.

They are setting themselves up to attract freebie hunters.

They do a “free challenge” and spend more time and money promoting and delivering it than they make and are left broke and ready to quit. I have seen it a hundred times.

TOO MANY “Guru’s” tell us to set up our Virtual Communities as “curriculum” based – what I mean is that it’s all about them being the AUDIENCE… the student . . . INSTEAD invite them to JOIN IN the conversation and CONNECT.

Connect with YOU and CONNECT with others in the community.

Especially when we are curating a virtual community of business owners, we want to encourage connections, referrals, conversations about what ELSE we have in common, all the while as the CURATOR you get to facilitate the connections.

My analogy is that you have the opportunity to be the HOSTESS, not the Lecturer. This is SO much more effective AND waaaaaay more FUN!!!

This alleviates you from having to be the ONLY ONE bringing value to the community.

This brings more people together.

This curated virtual community allows for you to stand out as the leader without having all of the burden or the heavy lifting all of the time.

Avoid standing behind the lecturn.

Instead, connect both on the main discussion page, in the comments of the discussions AND personally (this is the BIG difference riiight here).

It’s right there when you bring the conversation to 1:1 that it becomes an easy transition to ask about their business and that naturally leads them to ask you about yours.

Creating a Virtual Community is THE easiest way to create conversation opportunities with like-minded business people.

As long as you avoid showing up as the “lecturer”, and create opportunities for connection and conversation both within the group and personally, you will have a virtual community who will always stand beside you, listen to your offers when you have them and be the first in line to buy.

That is the power of building a Virtual Community the RIGHT WAY.

The #1 Sales Rules you might be breaking:

👉Prejudging

Let me explain: You think you know what someone will say or do before it happens.

😬Don’t take away their right to make their own decisions.

This is the thought that floats through the brain on someone who is pre-judging:
“I don’t want to invite them to _______ they probably_____”

Fill in the blank:
Don’t have the time
Don’t have the money
Don’t need it

We get in our own head and we stay silent.

We hide our offers.

That is not fair!

Especially to the people who literally are DREAMING of finding someone just like you!

They are thinking…
Boy, I wish there was a sales coach who had a simple and fun system for connecting with great people, identifying their needs and wants and then making them offers that feel completely custom (giving them extremely high value).

Or I wish there was a Virtual Assistant out there that could just upload everything from that challenge I ran in a Facebook group to my website …

Or I wish there was someone who could take those recordings I did on my phone and turn them into a weekly podcast!

Or I wish there was someone who could take this google doc and turn it into a gorgeous funnel.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Stop pre-judging and allow the people who need you to find you.

What can you DO instead???
1. Be open to all of the possibilities

2. Be okay with the page in your story that you are on today knowing that so much more awaits you but you must turn this page FIRST.

If you are the ONLY person actively selling for your business, it’s time to get GREAT at this. Ultimately, getting GREAT at asking questions will help on every phone call you are ever host but also on every sales page ever written and every social post or email ever created.

ASKING GREAT QUESTIONS takes some thought and preparation.

Approaching the Discovery Phase of the Sales Process Avoid these Mistakes:

😬 AVOID Sticking to the boring old, stale and predictably typical questions like “What are You Struggling With?”

😕 AVOID Taking their answer at face value
*Chances are they are NOT going to just hand over the FULL picture PLUS HOW they explain their problem is often NOT how YOU would explain it. They might use incorrect verbiage and VERY LIKELY it could sound like one thing when really… it’s something TOTALLY different — let’s AVOID that HERE.

😱 AVOID Attaching YOUR Emotions to THEIR Issues. You are there to help IF you can, and if not, no problem, you can refer them or something else (there are endless possibilities here).
